Triton's Farm ~ Turkeys on the farm
We currently have Naragansette's and Royal Palm tukeys.
We also raise the Broad Breasted for Meat.
I'm working on crossing a broad breasted bronze hen with a Naragansette Tom to produce a better meat turkey for free ranging.
As a meat turkey the Broad Breasted Turkeys are the ones people expect to see for Thanksgiving. I prefere the Heratige breed turkeys, but they are very wild and don't gain weight well. They take about 6 months to grow to a 12 - 15 pound turkey. The broad breasted turkeys take about 4 months to reach 20 pounds.
I would like something inbetween for meat production. So we kept 4 female broad breasted bronze turkeys to try our own meat cross. The females we kept were the smallest of the BBB with the best leg structure. So far they are doing great as far as health and structure goes. We'll see how this experiment turns out.
